Since 1998, A Walk in the Woods has provided dependable private shuttle transportation for hikers, backpackers, and outdoor adventurers throughout the Great Smoky Mountains and the southern Appalachian region.

Whether you’re planning a one-way backpacking trip, completing an Appalachian Trail section hike, or arranging transportation between trailheads, our experienced drivers help eliminate the logistics so you can focus on your adventure.

Our private shuttles are reserved exclusively for you and your party.

We’ve transported hikers everywhere from Amicalola Falls State Park, the southern approach to the Appalachian Trail, to Damascus, Virginia, one of the trail’s most iconic towns, and nearly everywhere in between.

Scheduled LeConte Trailhead Shuttles

Our scheduled public shuttle makes reaching the most popular Mount LeConte trailheads easy and stress-free.

Whether you’re staying at LeConte Lodge, hiking for the day, or connecting with the Appalachian Trail at Newfound Gap, our shuttle allows you to leave your vehicle in Gatlinburg while we handle the driving.

Popular Shuttle Stops

We currently offer service to:

    • Alum Cave Trail
    • Newfound Gap (Boulevard Trail & Appalachian Trail access)
    • Rainbow Falls Trail
    • Bullhead Trail

These trailheads serve the majority of visitors heading to Mount LeConte while also providing access to some of the park’s most popular day hikes.

At this time, we do not offer scheduled service to:

    • Trillium Gap Trail
    • Brushy Mountain Trail

These routes are available through our private shuttle service.

Smoky Mountain Shuttle Service

Morning & Afternoon Loops

Choose from five convenient shuttle loops with both morning and afternoon departures.

Each shuttle accommodates up to 14 passengers.

Public departures require a minimum of four passengers to operate.

Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during peak hiking season.

A Loop Shuttle

Our A Loop Shuttle includes stops at Alum Cave Bluffs Trailhead and Rainbow Falls Trailhead.

B Loop Shuttle

Our B Loop Shuttle includes stops at Alum Cave Bluffs Trailhead and Newfound Gap.

Private shuttles are reserved exclusively for your group and can be customized to your itinerary and trailhead. Public shuttles operate on a fixed schedule to select Mount LeConte trailheads and may include other passengers.

Absolutely. We regularly shuttle both AT thru-hikers and section hikers throughout the Smokies and beyond.

Yes. Many guests use our public shuttle for day hikes or to access the Appalachian Trail at Newfound Gap.

We’ve transported hikers as far south as Amicalola Falls, Georgia, and as far north as Damascus, Virginia. If your destination isn’t listed, contact us—we’re happy to discuss custom transportation.

Yes. Reservations are strongly encouraged for both private and public shuttles, particularly during spring and fall when demand is highest.

Shuttles for 1-5 clients canceled more than 72 hours prior to scheduled departure will receive a full refund. Shuttles for 1-5 clients canceled 72-48 hours prior to scheduled departure will receive a 50% refund. Shuttles for 1-5 clients canceled within 48 hours of scheduled departure time will not be refunded. For shuttles with over 6 clients we require 1 week notice to cancel. Cancellations between 1 week and 72 hours will be refunded 50% of cost. Shuttles canceled within 72 hours of departure will not be refunded. Although occasional rain is part of the Smoky Mountain experience, we will provide a refund in the event of unsafe weather related conditions providing that our driver has not already left to do your shuttle. Should a severe weather event occur and you are already doing the shuttle, we will refund you for the unused segment of your shuttle.

We pride ourselves for being on time. We ask that you are on time for your shuttle. We may have other shuttles scheduled around you and will not have time to wait. For every 15 minutes your party is late, there will be an additional charge of $10. If we cannot wait any longer and need to make a 2nd trip to pick up your group, there will be an additional charge of $50.

Please note that, outside of our initial pick up times, arrival times are approximate. There are many factors that affect arrival time that are beyond our control, such as the weather and traffic conditions. 

The parking lot at 309 Long Branch Rd is operated by Ober Mountain. In partnership with LeConte Lodge they are reserving a number of spaces for LeConte guests. Please visit LeConteLodge.com for more information on LeConte Parking Tags.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is enforcing parking tags for any vehicle parked longer than 15 minutes at any location in the Park. You can get your daily or weekly parking tag through us (a small convenience fee will be applied if we purchase and print your tag) or here.
