Smoky Mountains Firefly Basecamp Adventure Overview

Welcome to the Great Smoky Mountains & Your First Night Under the Stars

Meet your guides and fellow adventurers this morning in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. After introductions and a trip orientation, we’ll board our shuttle for a short drive to our first trailhead.

The Cucumber Gap Loop is the perfect introduction to the incredible biodiversity, history, and beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains. Following an old logging railroad grade, we’ll pass historic homesteads, small waterfalls, and numerous mountain stream crossings as our guides introduce you to the plants, wildlife, and stories that make this park so remarkable.

Later this afternoon, we’ll arrive at our private Wilderness Basecamp, where our camp host welcomes us with comfortable accommodations and a delicious Southern barbecue dinner.

As darkness settles over the mountains, the adventure takes on a whole new character. We’ll gather around the campfire before heading out to experience the Smokies after dark, searching for the magical glow of several species of fireflies that call these mountains home. Depending on conditions, you may even witness the park’s famous synchronous fireflies as the forest begins to twinkle beneath the stars.

All meals included.

Hiking: 5.4 miles | Elevation Gain/Loss: +800′ / -800′ | Transfers: 1.5 hours

Waterfalls, Wildflowers & An Evening of Wonder

After a leisurely mountain breakfast, today’s journey takes us past historic settlers’ homesteads and the remains of giant American chestnut trees before reaching picturesque Hen Wallow Falls.

Surrounded by rhododendron, towering hemlocks, and lush fern-covered forest, our naturalist guides transform the trail into an outdoor classroom, sharing the incredible biodiversity that earned the Smokies designation as both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve. Along the way, we’ll learn about edible plants, traditional Appalachian uses for native species, and the fascinating relationships that make this ecosystem so unique.

Back at camp, there’s time to relax, play lawn games, enjoy another delicious meal, and gather around the campfire for s’mores.

After sunset, we’ll once again venture into the darkness as the forest comes alive with blinking lights. Each evening offers a different experience, and our guides will help you discover the fascinating behaviors of the Smokies’ many firefly species while listening to the sounds of the nighttime forest.

All meals included.

Hiking: 5 miles | Elevation Gain/Loss: +1,000′ / -1,000′ | Transfers: 1 hour

History, Mountain Views & One Last Magical Evening

Today’s adventure explores one of the most fascinating cultural landscapes in the national park—home to the largest collection of historic artifacts in the National Park System.

Following a beautiful mountain stream through towering old-growth forest, we’ll discover remnants of the families who once called these mountains home before climbing to one of the Smokies’ most spectacular overlooks, where sweeping mountain vistas and dramatic rock formations reward our efforts.

Back at Basecamp, we’ll enjoy one final dinner together before settling in around the campfire to share stories from the week.

As darkness falls, we’ll celebrate our final evening beneath the stars with one last firefly walk. Whether it’s your first time experiencing the glowing forest or your third night in a row, it’s a magical reminder that some of nature’s greatest spectacles happen after the sun goes down.

All meals included.

Hiking: 4.5–6 miles | Elevation Gain/Loss: +1,000′ to +1,500′ | Transfers: 2 hours

Waterfalls, Whitewater & Farewell to the Smokies

After breakfast, we say goodbye to Basecamp and begin our final day together with one last scenic waterfall hike, soaking in the peaceful beauty of the Smokies before leaving the mountains behind.

From there, we travel south through Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the Nantahala Outdoor Center, where another adventure awaits.

After several days exploring on foot, we’ll trade hiking boots for paddles as we enjoy a fun-filled whitewater rafting trip down the scenic Nantahala River. Guided by experienced river professionals, this Class II and III adventure is the perfect finale to four unforgettable days of hiking, campfires, waterfalls, and magical evenings beneath glowing forests.

We’ll return to Gatlinburg in the early evening with wonderful memories—and perhaps a new appreciation for the magic that comes alive in the Smokies after dark.
